Hiking the páramo is a trip that will get people through this especial ecosystem, will show a glimpse of the 2% of the area that represents the Páramos in Colombia. Plus you can have the chances to peak the second highest peak of the region. You must have headlamps. Don’t forget!
Starting from the Cocora valley 2,400m (7,874ft), one of the most visited places in Salento; the corner of biodiversity; over more than 1000 wax palms; home of the Black-and chestnut eagle, hunting and breeding area. We will ascent trough the canyon of the “Cardenas” creek, which is the main flowing of the Quindio River. Lodging in a traditional milk farm at 3,400m (11,154ft) with a “Salento” family, creator of the extinct “Salentina” potato cultivar.
Continuing our ascent to Los Nevados National park through the Elfin forest, Sub-páramo, and Páramo ecosystems in one day; habitat of the rare and endemic “Rufous fronted parakeet”, “Andean Condor”, “Black Chested – Buzzard Eagle” and many others such as rare mammals like the “Northern Pudu” world smallest deer. On the track a good views of the Quindio volcano; the chance of peaking the second highest peak in the region 4,300m (14,107ft) a unique an astonishing summit, with the views of the whole massif from Ruiz volcano to Tolima volcano.

THE OTÚN TRAVERSE

This is one of our favourites and first hikes we started from. A hike from the western slope of the park, with a flexible itinerary, coming from Salento to Santa Rosa village across the Otún lagoon.

Day 2. Distance from La Argentina farm to Berlin farm: 9km Estimate time: 4-5 hours Altitud gain: 3400m – 4750m – 3800m

From La argentina farm hike until 4000m (13,123ft), be prepare to encounter Paramillo del Quindio, one of the biggest volcanos in the National park, and extinct volcano, with 2km in diameter at the inner side of the caldera, probably affected by the erosive action of the ice and an intense hydrothermal activity; limmit of the Quindio department and the highest point of the Region. This day you could choose to hike into the Waterlands and enjoy the majesty of an unique volcanic landscape. Then a quick hike to the Berlin farm, where dinner at farmers houses will be take, and accommodation in tents.
On the way to the Berlin farm where the team will spend the night, We will try to peak one of the Highest summits of the surroundings, letting the visitor meet the whole range of altitud variations, from Sub Páramo, to the Borders of Super Paramo. (4,300m – 14,107ft ). Over the crest and ridges It is noticed a complex network of waterlands distributed along canyons and valleys; once the fog is turn into water and kept in the marshes it will run downwards, feeding the rivers of two different regions.
Early morning from the Berlin canyon (3800m) start the day to hike 12km from “El bosque” Village, accompanied with astonishing views will conduct us inside a geological formation, to the Otún wetland complex included in the RAMSAR convention; followed by the Otún lagoon, biggest lagoon in the National park, full of birdlife; great views of Paramillo of Santa Rosa and Santa Isabel glacier. After a quick lunch we will descend besides “el valle de los condores” a complex systems of wetlands which will draw the natural features of the Páramo. After the descent You will have a 4×4 ride across “Cortaderal” road, following the steps of the great explorer Thomas Van Der Hammen and finally enjoy Santa Rosa and the cozy hot springs (not included in the price, but a great opportunity to enjoy Risaralda department).

On the second day the Group will be lead through the left side of the “Cardenas” River, across this astonishing landscape, We will encounter with several ecosystems such as the “Elfin forest”, with the presence of the “Black chested – buzzard eagle” many bird life and the rare and endemic “Rufous fronted parakeet”. Next stop will be at the “Buenos Aires” farm, where We will be sheltered under an old structure; Continuing from the vast scenery, the three-line will be over and will bring the rare and unique Páramo with the particulars “Frailejones” from the genus Espeletia, with Its succulent hairy leaves and spongy trunks will capture water of eventually passing clouds, releasing it through the roots into the soil, forming subterranean water deposits and finally rivers.
Distance to the summit and back down 4750m (15,583ft): 4km Estimated time up and down: 3.5 hours
Enjoy the views of the Tolima Volcano, and far away the imposing Quindio Volcano, with Its rare colors and variety of textures your mind will blow up. Within Its direction you will notice many changes in the vegetation; progressively from the bottom of the crater until the arid and silently summit of the Volcano 4,750m (15,583ft); You will get drawn but this giant mountain, composed by the stratification of ashes and small plants of the Super- Páramo ecosystem such as many lichens and Senecio genus within Its many endemism.
Distance from the Caldera to La argentina farm: 8km Estimated time: 3 – 4 hours.
Back on the tracks to the farm the Team will be lead through the right side of this gigantic caldera, It constitute a wide diameter of 2km, then get ready to get inside some of the rarest landscapes and most fragile scenery; a complex systems of small rivers, peatlands, and bogs, constituted mainly by the rare Distichia muscoides, which gathers in between to dam the water and establishes a natural barrier of small paths of water that conform the Wetlands of the Quindio river.
Back on the Farm enjoy the warm kitchen of “Doña Gloria”, with Her kindness and hospitality You will forget all the effort and the tiredness of this hike.

Trekking grades It is very hard to precise the difficulty of the Hike or the Climb; overall it depends on the grade fitness of the client, the altitud, the number of days of the expedition and the time involved during the trip; both fiscally and mental preparation are fundamental. Therefore We have decided to rate the hikes/Expeditions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Even more the climbs and the hikes are therefore likely to change the grade of difficulty depending on the weather season (Raining/Dry). However please have in mind that this are factors that change with every client and affects different especially the altitud, and thus the ratings are not definitive. This should be use as a guide through out the decision of your trip.
1: Well marked paths; Needed little or none experience. Time of duration 4-6 hrs, Hikes below 4000m. Health and fitness is beneficial.
2: Muddy terrain, uneven paths – Hikes above 4000m – Duration of the hike 6 – 8hrs minimum – Need some hiking gear and especial clothes requirements. Health and fitness is necessary.
3: Uneven paths with rocks and mud – Hikes above 4000m – Duration 8 – 10hrs – Duration of the expedition 3 – 5 days. Health and fitness is necessary.
4: Paths that can get lost during the hike – Some bushwhacking needed in some of the cases – Need some skills with specialised gear – Might need the use of your hand for balance. Fitness and endurance necessary.
5: Hikes below 5000m – May need to rope up, use harness and climbing gear – 4 to 6 days of hiking – 8 to 10hrs or more needed – Experience is required at altitud – Fitness and endurance required.
6: Expeditions +7 days – Climbing skills needed – Experience on remote places is required – Objetives of more that +5000m – Duration of the hikes between 10 to +12hrs – Level of fitness and endurance need to be very high.

This is pure hiking, no altitud that might compromise the trip, one opportunity to enjoy the Paramo, the habitants, and the richness of the environment.
Day 1. Total Distance: 14km Approx. Estimate time: 7-8 hours Altitud gain: 2400m – 3600m – 3300m
Hike from Cocora Valley through the “San jose” creek to “Estrella de agua”, biological station located at 3,170m (10,400ft); home of 96 species of Birds and mammals as the uncommon Spectacled Bear, Mountain tapir and much more; enjoy lunch on a traditional wood stove with Doña Ludivia, Don Carlos and their son “Juancho”, whom are doing what they love for this place, maintain the tracks and have them in perfect conditions.
Then continue for another 2km inside the humid high Andean forest, this will be the toughest, steepest and muddiest part, until páramo ecosystem at 3.600m (11.811 ft); Across the line step back in the cloud forest and sleep in humble farm for one night at the Toche valley 3.200m (10,827 ft). Arrive to finca “EL BERGEL”
Day 2. Total Distance: 13km Estimated time 8 hours Altitud gain: 3300m – 4000m – 3400m
From the Toche canyon hike across the Line, into “La virgen” peak 4000m (13,123 ft), with the astonishing views of Tolima volcano and Quindio Volcano. Get back down into the high Andean forest, and across the ruins of el Bosque farm. Once the Cardenas creek is crossed, steep hike for the last push, 4km ahead full of bird life, The black-chested buzzard-eagle, The grey breasted mountain toucan, The scarlet-bellied mountain tanager, The golden-plumed parakeet among many others that you will discover during the hike. In the farm people will enjoy the welcoming of this traditional potato cultivar family at “LA ARGENTINA” farm.
Day 3. Distance: 10 km Estimated time: 6-7 horas Altitud gain: 3400m – 4300m – 3800m
On the way to “BERLIN” farm where the team will spend the night, We will try to peak one of the Highest summits of the surroundings. (4,300m – 14,107ft ). Across the pass located at 4200m (13,779 ft) down into the Berlin canyon, tall Frailejones (Speletia artuegiana) will make the hike enjoyable, endemic hummingbird – Buffy Helmetcrest (Oxypogon stubelii) will show during mornings and rainy season.
Day 4. Distance: 11 km Estimated time: 6 – 8 horas Altitud gain: 3700m – 4250 – 3800m
Across the skyline of the volcano basin step into one of the well preserved places of the park with many endemism, get through the deep and ancient paths of the colonist, and again into the next humble farm “BAGASECA”.
Optional (Hard) Distance to summit 4750m: 10km Distance to the Farm: 11km
Early morning start the day to hike into the Otún wetland complex included in the RAMSAR convention; followed by the Otún lagoon, biggest lagoon in the National park, full of birdlife; great views of Paramillo of Santa Rosa and Santa Isabel glacier. After a quick lunch we will descend besides “el valle de los condores” a complex systems of wetlands which will draw the natural features of the Paramo ecosystem. After the descent You will have a 4×4 ride across “Cortaderal” road, following the steps of the great explorer Thomas Van Der Hammen and finally enjoy Santa Rosa and the cozy thermal springs (not included in the price, but a great opportunity to enjoy Risaralda department).
